IBM recently made an announcement that it was moving into the cognitive computing era, I say they have been doing it for years under the big data analytics header.
Human cognition – is conscious and unconscious, concrete or abstract, as well as intuitive (like knowledge of a language) and conceptual (like a model of a language). Cognitive processes use existing knowledge and generate new knowledge.
So it’s like following a path in your brain you follow that path over and over creating a worn pathway, until you get to a junction. Then you select the best one going forward from there based on your previous experiences. It helps you evaluate the best course of action at any given time.
If you ask me it’s like you have limitless choices to take, but you will think on past good or bad experiences to determine what you think will be the outcome, it may not always be 100% the same outcome, but if the parameters are the same then it will fall in the 95%-100%. You play “safe” this is what cognitive thinking is to me I’m not claiming to give any phycology exams or have medical certificates but suggest this simply puts it into terms we can all understand.
So know why do I say it’s the same as big data analytics well bid data is simply those choices and analytics is watching trends to determine what will be the outcome.
1st it was deep blue taking on chess world champion Gary Kasparov a man who I was in awe of when, I first learned how to play chess. I use to watch Kasparov vs Short in 1993 loved watching how he decimated Short and it took until game 16 before Short took a full point for winning a game!
I then watched as Deep Blue took Kasparov apart in the same manner thus the beginning of big data analytics.
Watson was the real catalyst for the cognitive era, as it looked at data throughout of the web to derive an outcome on the american game of jeopardy it makes you think what is next?
If we think it’s just the start giving us reason to how AI will assist us in the future.
